Breast Augmentation

Achieve the Most Natural-Looking Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty or a "boob job," is a procedure designed to enhance the shape, size, or volume of the breasts. At Nip & Tuck Plastic Surgery, Dr. Norman Stewart is dedicated to providing the highest quality breast augmentation services in Atlanta.

What is Breast Augmentation?

The ideal breast implant is tailored to your goals, body type, and anatomy. We take great care in evaluating your body to achieve the breast size and shape that complements you best.

This is typically determined by factors like the width of your chest and the amount of natural breast tissue you have. Ultimately, your unique anatomy will guide the choice of implant size to create a balanced, proportionate breast appearance.

What Types of Breast Implants Are Available?

Breast augmentation offers individuals in the Atlanta area the chance to enhance their natural body contours and boost their confidence. The two main types of breast implants are saline and silicone. Saline implants are filled with sterile salt water and are known for their adjustability, allowing for easier size modifications after surgery. Silicone implants, filled with a cohesive silicone gel, provide a more natural look and feel, closely mimicking real breast tissue. Both types have their own advantages and considerations.

Saline

Silicone

Silicone implants consist of a silicone shell filled with a silicone gel. If these implants leak, the gel may remain inside the casing, but it could also escape into the pocket where the implant sits, potentially causing the implant to collapse.

The newer silicone gels are denser and have a more gummy texture compared to older gels. These implants offer a more natural look and feel and are less likely to leak, making them a popular choice for those seeking the most natural results.

Saline implants feature an elastomer silicone shell that is filled with sterile saline solution. The amount of solution used can be adjusted to achieve the desired feel and firmness. One of the key benefits of saline implants is that the saline solution is safe for the body. In the event of a leak, the body naturally absorbs and eliminates the liquid.

Teardrop

Breast implants come in two main shapes: round and teardrop. Many people choose teardrop implants because they mimic the natural curve of the breast, with a tapered top and most of the fullness at the bottom.

Originally used for breast reconstruction after mastectomy, teardrop implants are now also available for cosmetic breast augmentations. However, the shape of your chest and breast tissue may influence the type of implant that best suits you. For individuals with shallower breasts, round implants might be a better option as they add fullness to the top of the breast.

Breast implants can shift after being inserted, but this is less noticeable with round implants. Teardrop implants have textured membranes that encourage your body to generate scar tissue, which helps hold the implants in place and reduces the chances of rotation.

Dr. Norman Stewart, MD, in Atlanta does NOT use textured implants. Textured implants were removed from the market due to concerns related to BIA-ALCL (Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma).

Most breast implants last between 10 to 20 years, although they may need to be replaced sooner if complications occur, such as hardening, rupture, leakage, rippling, or a change in position.

If needed, you can replace the implants with a new set. In some cases, you may need to consider different options for the second surgery, particularly if your skin has sagged or your body shape has changed since the first procedure.

What Are the Potential Risks of Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation in Atlanta is generally considered a safe procedure, with most women recovering quickly. However, like any surgery, there are potential risks such as infection, reactions to anesthesia or medications, and bleeding.

Specific risks associated with breast augmentation include:

  • Reduced sensation in the nipples

  • Thickened scar tissue

  • Uneven nipple position

  • Implant rupture

  • Visible rippling

  • Asymmetrical breasts

Emotional side effects can also occur. Some individuals may struggle to adjust to their new body shape, while others may feel disappointed if people don’t notice their cosmetic changes.

That said, most patients are satisfied with their results, feeling more confident, attractive, and empowered. Having realistic expectations for breast implant surgery can help ensure a positive experience. Feel free to ask any questions and share any concerns, and we'll work with you to achieve the best possible outcome.

Breast Implant Surgery Expectations

Before deciding to undergo breast augmentation, it’s essential to have a thorough consultation with a board-certified Atlanta plastic surgeon. Be open about your reasons for pursuing the procedure and discuss your goals and expectations. Whether you’re seeking a subtle enhancement or a more significant transformation, your breast augmentation should be customized to align with your desires.

During your consultation, we will help you select the right size and type of implant. We'll also discuss your incision options, which are determined by the type and size of the implant, as well as your body’s anatomy. You’ll also receive specific instructions on how to prepare for surgery.

Most patients undergo general anesthesia during the procedure, so you won’t experience any pain during the operation. The implant is placed into a pocket beneath the outer breast tissue. With a submuscular placement, the implant is positioned beneath the pectoral muscle, while a submammary implant sits above the pectoral muscle but beneath the breast tissue.

After placing the implant, the surgeon will close the incision using stitches or sutures. If dissolvable sutures are used, they will dissolve on their own in about six weeks. For other types of stitches, a follow-up visit may be required to have them removed.

Although the incisions will be visible initially, they will fade over time and typically don’t leave noticeable scarring. Our goal is to enhance your appearance with minimal scarring.

We can make incisions in the following areas:

  • The crease beneath the breast (inframammary fold)

  • The armpit (axillary approach)

  • Around the nipple (circumareolar)

What is the Recovery Period Like?

Recovery from breast augmentation surgery is generally straightforward, but it’s important to give your body the time it needs to heal properly. Here's what you can expect:

  • Post-Operative Discomfort: After the anesthesia wears off, you may feel groggy and sore. We’ll provide pain medication to manage any discomfort. It’s essential that you have someone drive you home after the procedure and stay with you overnight to assist in the first stage of recovery.

  • Movement and Rest: Most patients in the Atlanta area can move around the next day, but you’ll still experience soreness for about 5-7 days. During this time, it’s best to rest and take it easy to avoid strain. If needed, we’ll help manage your pain medication, and many patients benefit from wearing recovery bras to improve comfort and support healing. These bras help maintain proper circulation, drainage, and stability for your implants.

  • Wearing a Bra: You’ll need to wear a special bra that’s comfortable and breathable, preferably without wires, to avoid irritation on your incision. It’s recommended to wear this bra consistently, day and night, to aid in healing. Make sure the bra is seamless and gentle on your skin.

  • Physical Activity: While you may start feeling better after the second week, it’s crucial to refrain from strenuous exercise or any vigorous activities, such as running, jumping, lifting heavy objects, or carrying children, until fully recovered. If your job involves physical labor, you might need to take 3 weeks to a month off to ensure proper healing. Most patients can return to all activities, including exercise, within two months.

Following these guidelines will help you recover effectively and enjoy your new results with minimal complications.

At Nip & Tuck Plastic Surgery, the price includes all pre- and post-operative appointments, anesthesia, surgical materials, and compression garments prescribed after the procedure. However, prescription pain medications are not included and cannot be provided by our office.

Breast Augmentation FAQs

What is breast enhancement surgery?

Surgical breast augmentation in Atlanta offers a reliable and semi-permanent solution to enhance the volume and fullness of the breast area. This can be achieved using breast implants, which typically feature a silicone shell filled with either saline or silicone gel, or through fat grafting, a procedure that involves transferring fat from other areas of your body (such as the love handles) to the breasts.

What happens at my initial consultation?

During your consultation with Dr. Norman Stewart, he will thoroughly explain all aspects of the breast augmentation procedure in Atlanta. This includes discussing your goals and expectations, reviewing potential risks and complications, and helping you choose the implant option that best suits you. He will also provide detailed information about the cost of the surgery, recovery timeframes, and potential scarring outcomes, ensuring that you are fully informed before making any decisions about proceeding with the treatment.

What are the different types of breast implants?

When considering breast implants, there are two main types to choose from: silicone and saline, each with its own set of benefits and drawbacks. Saline implants are generally more affordable than silicone ones, but silicone implants tend to feel more natural and are less prone to rippling. Additionally, because saline implants are filled after insertion into the breast pocket during surgery, they typically require smaller incisions compared to silicone implants.

What can I expect following a breast augmentation procedure?

After your Atlanta breast augmentation, you may experience a "riding high" effect, which can last for up to three months. However, there’s no need to worry—once this period is over, the implants will gradually settle into their natural position.

What is the duration of a breast augmentation procedure?

On the day of your surgery, you can expect to be at our surgical center for about three hours. The procedure itself typically lasts between 45 minutes to an hour, with the remaining time spent administering anesthesia and preparing you for your return home.

What type of anesthesia is used during a breast augmentation procedure?

During the procedure, a skilled anesthesia provider will monitor your vital signs and airway. In most cases, general anesthesia is administered.

What can I expect during the recovery process?

As you recover from anesthesia, it’s crucial to have someone drive you home and stay with you for the first 24 hours after surgery. To effectively manage pain, your doctor may prescribe a combination of narcotic medications and NSAIDs. Once you’ve finished these medications, it’s generally safe to resume driving. Most patients can return to work within 3-5 days. Additionally, you should wear a sports bra for at least 3-4 weeks post-surgery and avoid any strenuous activities or exercise during this period. Most importantly, prioritize rest by sleeping on your back or side throughout the recovery process.

What type of scarring can I expect?

To minimize visible scarring, breast augmentation incisions are strategically placed in discreet areas. Typically, a small 1-2 inch scar is hidden within the natural fold beneath each breast. Alternatively, you may choose a periareolar incision, which blends seamlessly along the border between the areola and the surrounding skin.

What potential complications can arise from breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a highly safe procedure, with only a 5% risk of complications. While rare, potential issues may include infection at the incision site, hematoma, or scarring. During your consultation, Dr. Norman Stewart will provide more detailed information and address any questions or concerns you may have about these risks.

How many follow-up appointments will I need after surgery?

Following your Atlanta breast augmentation, you will have at least three follow-up appointments with Dr. Norman Stewart: one week after surgery, at two months, and again at six months post-procedure. If you need an additional checkup between these visits, feel free to contact us at any time!

Would a breast lift be necessary for me?

During your initial consultation, Dr. Norman Stewart will assess your needs and recommend the best approach for you. If a lift is necessary, augmentation alone will not be advised—instead, a combined procedure called augmentation mastopexy may be suggested. A breast lift helps reshape the breasts while repositioning the nipple-areolar complex to sit higher on the breast mound. Generally, individuals with breast tissue extending below the natural fold may benefit from both procedures together.

When is an augmentation mastopexy (breast lift with implants) recommended?

Patients with loose breast skin and loss of volume often seek augmentation mastopexy to restore fullness and shape.

Why does an augmentation mastopexy carry a higher risk of complications?

An augmentation mastopexy combines a breast lift with implants, simultaneously tightening the breast skin while adding volume. If careful consideration isn’t given to implant size or the amount of skin removed, there is a risk of compromised skin integrity, which can lead to wound complications, including nipple loss.

Will I need a mammogram before undergoing breast surgery?

Mammograms are essential for individuals over 40 and those with a personal or family history of breast cancer. For specific guidelines, refer to the American Cancer Society website. A mammogram serves as a crucial baseline for future comparisons and can help detect hidden malignancies that may require further evaluation and treatment, potentially preventing the progression of disease.

How is the appropriate implant size chosen?

The ideal implant size, shape, and projection are determined by considering both the patient’s aesthetic goals and objective measurements, such as breast base width and the distance from the nipple to the inframammary fold. This personalized approach ensures the best fit for a successful and natural-looking outcome.
